BOWLING.
OPENING OF THE EOCAE
GREEN
The local bowling green was opened yesterday afternoon by the Mayor (G. H. Stiles Esq.). Visiting bowlers were present from Otnki, Levin and Shannon, and there was a large attendance of the local public. The Committee erected a large marque where the ladies dispensed afternoon tea and which provided shelter from the summer shower which fell during the afternoon. The Borough Band greatly enlivened the proceedings and added to the pleasure of the outing. The Mayor, in his 1 speech, traced the history of the Club and said there was still a great deal to do before the scheme was completed. A croquet lawn was to be laid down, a pavilion erected and the grounds beautified. He made special mention of the good work done by the secretary whose enthusiasm had been infectious. He also eulogised the ladies for the assistance they had rendered. The membership was, he believed, a record for a small club but the committee hoped to see more names added to the list. It was very encouraging to see such a large number ot visiting bowlers present. He then formally declared the green open and called upon the Mayoress to deliver the first ball, which was done amidst hearty applause, At the conclusion of the Mayor’s speech the band struck up “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Rinks were selected by the President and Vice-president and some very enjoyable games were played. Five full rinks occupied the green. The local bowlers although they did not succeed in pulling off any games made an excellent showing and their play was very favourably commented upon by the visitors. The green came in for a good deal of criticism. One experienced bowler said that for a new green it was the best he had played on. Several very valuable hints were given to the club, which no doubt will be acted upou in the future. At the conclusion of the games the President, Mr Stiles, called for three cheers lor the visitors which were heartily given and responded to. A like compliment was paid to the ladies.
