He said that men of moderate opinions were coming over to the Conservatives. If the Liberals’ proposals were carried the time when the House of Commons was a place of free debate would be gone for ever. The Government meant to give one Chamber power to rule, that Chamber working under a gag. The actions of the House of Commons under the group system may not in the least represent the peoble’s settled will. Mr Winston Churchill, Home Secretary, who had spoken at Cheshire earlier, took a special train to Great Grimsby, and spoke there till midnight. Relays of motors carried fragments of Mr Balfour’s speech to the meeting to enable Mr Churchill to reply thereto. Pie said the Lords’ reforms supported the creation of a new Heaven, a new earth, and very likely a new something else also, which would be thoroughly democratic, thoroughly impartial and thoroughly Tory. Nbw York, Dec. 4.

The American United Irish League sends £2OOO in aid of the Nationalists’ fight in Great Britain. Subscriptions are arriving from everywhere in the United States.

Mr Austin Chamberlain, speaking at Darlington, declared that if a Unionist Government came into power it would frame its tariff reform proposals. If the electors disliked it and said “no” it would be the signal of his retirement from the Government.
