ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.
.LEAVES LYTTELTON. Christchurch, Saturday. The British Antarctic expedition ship Terra Nova left to-day for Port Chalmers, en route for Antarctica, and Capt. Scott and members of the expedition were given a hearty send-off. The ship was made ready for sea by noon, at which hour divine service was conducted on the poop deck by Rev E. Eliot Chambers and Bishop Julius preached an impressive sermon. Captain and Mrs Scott, Dr, and Mrs Wilson B. C. Day, motor expert and J. J. Kinsey (local representative of the expedition) were entertained at luncheon on board the s.s. Ruapehu by the Chairman and Directors of the New Zealand Shipping Co. The Terra Nova cast off shortly before 3 o’clock amidst the blowing of sirens by vessels in port, the explosion of day signals and the cheers of crowds, and was accompanied to the Heads by the Harbour Board's tug, on board of which there were 300 or 400 guests, and by numerous small steamers crowded with excursionists. The Terra Nova was heartily cheered as she passed H.M.S. Cambrian. Sir Joseph Ward telegraphed to the Chairman of the Harbour Board regretting his inability to be present and wishing the expedition “God speed.” Capt. Scott joins the Terra Nova on Monday at Port Chalmers, from where the vessel departs on Tuesday.
