BREACH OF PROMISE CASE.
Christchurch, November 25. In the Supreme Court this morning, .Elizabeth Gunn, waitress claimed ,£250 from Charles Wesley Hayes, commercial traveller, for breach of promise. The evidence showed that defendant had broken the engagement three weeks before the date fixed for the marriage. An interesting point was that defendant, in breaking the engagement had said that he was being threatened with a breach of promise action by another girl. He incidentally quoted a fictitious interview with Mr Alpers, who appeared for plaintiff in the present case. Mr Alpers created some amusement by repudiating the bad law attributed to him by the defendant. There was virtually no defence on the facts, and the judge fixed damages at with costs.
