HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

There was a record attendance at the general meeting of the local Horticultural Society held in the Council Chambers last night. Mr Alex. Speirs (President) occupied the chair. Formal correspondence was read and dealt with, A letter was read from Mr Richardson, offering to place one of his company’s commodious buildings at the disposal of the society, free of cost, in which to hold the show next week, on account of the local Public Hall being destroyed by fire. Mr Richardson’s generous offer, which included lighting, was favourably commented on, but the chairman explained that overtures had been made to secure the old school. The secretary was instructed to write and thank Mr Richardson for his thoughtful and generous offer. It was decided that the Chairman, Secretary and Messrs Hornblow and Woods make arrangements re obtaining the old school for the show on Wednesday and Thursday next. It was resolved to light the building with kerosene lamps, and appoint Mr Martin nightwatchman on the same terms as last year. Messrs Hussey and Wynd were appointed to take charge of the doors during the show. Notice of motion was givep to amend Rule 9 in order to allow the Treasurer to sign cheques in conjunction with the Secretary and President. Mr Galland’s motion, notice of which had been previously given, that a lady’s ticket should accompany each member’s ticket, was carried unanimously. Mesdames A. S. Easton, Mandl and Seabury were appointed stewards in place of three resigned. The Chairman said that a number of tables borrowed for All Saints’ Bazaar had been destroyed, but would be replaced. The stewards of the tea-room were authorised to purchase refreshments if required. Other matters of a minor nature were discussed, and the meeting rose.
