OBITUARY.

C. V. FURRIE, AGED 65 YEARS. It is our painful duty to record the de.'th of another of Foxton’s old settlers, in the person of Mr C. V. Furrie at the age of 65 years. The deceased had only been ailing for about a fortnight with an attack of pleurisy. Oilier complications, however, set in and it was found advisable to remove him to the district hospital last Monday. Despite all that medical skill could do, he passed quietly away on Tuesday evening.

The la*e Mr .Furrie was born in Steiliugshire, Scotland, and served his time in a soft goods warehouse. He subsequently travelled tor a big solt goods firm. Hearing good reports of New Zealand he determined to try his luck here, and arrived in Wellington by the ship Hawera in 1875. After spending a time in the Empire City, he settled in Foxton in 187 S, and was connected with several local businesses. He was also married here in the same year. Although he never took a front rank in local politics he was keenly interested in all matters which had for their object the advancement of the town and at one time was a member of the Council. He was a very well read man and was well posted in Colonial as well as British politics. Periodically he would drop in and discuss these subjects with us and many an interesting half-hour was thus spent. The works of Shakespeare and Burns he greatly prized and when in the right mood would dwell on the writings of these literary giants. He was of a kindly disposition and possessed more than the average Scotchman’s sense of humour. We mourn the loss of a respected friend, and, in common with the Foxton public, extend our heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing widow and family. The remains of the deceased were brought from Palmerston last night and were interred in the Foxton cemetery this afternoon. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev G. K. Aitken, of the Presbyterian Church, of which the deceased was a regular attendant.
