ALLEGED BREACH OF AWARD.
At the Palmerston Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, A. Seifert (Mr In lies') was charged, on the information of W. J. Culver, Inspector of Awards, with employing Thos. Chamberlain as a sorter and paying him below award rates. Defendant was further charged with employing Daniel Mullins under similar conditions.
Thos. Veale, employed in A. Seifert’s mill at Koputaroa, said that he was one of five contractors to do certain work at the mill. His part of the work, sorting, did not suit him, and he arranged with Chamberlain to fill his place on agreement that bis mates accepted. C. Simpson, another of the contractors, said that Chamberlain took Veale’s place as sorter. Witness and his other mates did not raise any objection to the agreement arrived at between Veale and Chamberlain.
Wra. Norman, manager at the mill, said Veale told him that Chamberlain was taking his place, and witness agreed.
The S.M. said that it appeared to him that the proceedings were much too casual for him to hold that Chamberlain was a contractor, aud he pointed out to both employers and employees that a contract was in some cases a serious matter, and each should be prepared to carry it out. It was not a serious breach, however, and a declaration of breach was entered in Chamberlain’s case without penalty, and a fine of £2 recorded in Mullin’s case.
