A SAD END.
YOUNG WOMAN DIES OF BLOOD POISONING. Christchurch, Oct. 25. An inquest was held to-day concerning the death of May Victoria Riggs, aged twenty-four years, who died in the hospital on Sunday. The evidence showed that the girl had been a barmaid at Petoue, and had come to Christchurch lately. She had had a miscarriage, and blood-poisoning supervened. The girl was sent to the hospital, and died there. She was a single girl when admitted, but had been married to George Arthur Riggs in the institution. It was stated that the girl attributed the trouble to a fall, but the doctor said he did not believe an accident of the kind described was responsible. Riggs said he had been engaged to marry the girl. He knew of her condition, but could offer no explanation as to the cause of the miscarriage. The girl had come to Christchurch to marry him, and for no other purpose. The coroner returned a verdict that death was due to septicaemia following a miscarriage, but there was no evidence as to how the miscarriage had been caused.
