CRICKET.
The cricket season was opened yesterday on the Victoria Park pitch with a match, married v single. Neither side were able to muster a full team, but a very enjoyable game was played with eight men aside, resulting in a win for those who are enjoying “single blessedness” by 28 runs on their first innings. Thebenidicts had a second turn at the batting crease and made a fairly good stand, but the single men did not have time for a second Innings. As this was the first time local knights of the willow had donned the flannels this season nothing phenomenal in batting or bowling was expected, and on yesterday’s form it does not look as it Foxton is likely to produce a Grace, a Trumper, a Heacue or a Trumble —at least not this season anyhow. However, they say practice makes perfect, and although the local cricketers have a terrible long way to go before they can ever hope to get anywhere near perfection, their present form can be vastly improved by diligent practice. The following were the scores in yesterday’s game : married men. —xst innings. Munro, b Evans 2 Robinson, c Evans, b How 5 Ward, b Evans 0 Whibley, c Clingberg, b Evans 1 W.
