HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
A general meeting of members of the Foxton Horticultural Society was held in the Council Chamber last night. The President (Mr Alex- Speirs), occupied the chair, and there was a most satisfactory attendance, between 30 and 40 members being present. Correspondence was read from Messrs Taylor and Opie, and Mrs Selby regretting that they were unable to accept the positions of judges at the forthcoming show. Mr Opie stated that he had approached Mr FUiott, art master at the Technical School and he was willing te take Mr Opie’s place as judge. It was decided to appoint Mr Shailer, of Palmerston North, as judge in Mr Taylor’s place with the exception of dairy produce, and Mr Aim, of Shannon, judge in that class. Mrs Brown, of Levin, was appointed to take Mrs Selby’s place. The arrangement made by Mr Opie in getting Mr Elliott to take bis place was confirmed.
It was reported that Mesdames Gower aud Healey would be uuable to take charge of the sweets stall at the coming show but they were quite prepared to do all they possibly could to assist. Mesdames Dr. Adams and Woods were appointed to fill the vacancy.
Mr A. S. Easton wrote enclosing a cheque for £1 is towards the funds.
Correspondence was read from Messrs Thomas Hortou, Limited, and Messrs Wighton and Co., agreeing to take the usual space for exhibition purposes. Messrs A. Yates and Co. forwarded a coupon for 5s worth of seeds and Messrs VVighton and Co. signified their willingness to donate seeds and plants for sale at the show, the proceeds to go to the funds of the Society.
Mr Betty wrote advising that the orchestra would be pleased to assist the Society in every way possible, free of charge. The reading of this communication was the signal for prolonged applause. A letter was read from the agent for the Public Hall stating that he had booked the Hall to the Show dates, and the price would be £3 ios. It was thought that the charge mentioned was rather high and Messrs Woods and Patterson were appointed to wait on the aeent and endeavour to arrange better terms. Mrs Stewart asked why Mr A. S. Kaston’s name had been omitted from the list of vicepresidents as printed iu the catalogue. The secretary stated, that the mistake was his. In sending the list to file printers he had inadvertently omitted Mr Kaston’s name. He deeply regretted that the mistake bad been made and would write to Mr Easton apologising for the error.
It was decided to issue one lady’s ticket with each member’s ticket.
Accounts amounting to something over .£lO were passed for payment. Other matters in connection with the forthcoming show were arranged and the meeting terminated.
