The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, October 20, 1910. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
Although the Shannon Debating Society practically settled this burning question of land tenure at one of their recent meetings, there would appear to be one or two points upon which additional light may yet be thrown. The respective qualities of leasehold and freehold are, we understand, to be exposed to the tierce white light that beats upon a public platform on the evening of Monday, the 31st inst., at the Diuids’ Hall, Shannon. Mr Geo. Eaureuson M.P., will uphold the leasehold end of the stick, whilst Mr J. C. Cooper, of Pahiatua, will grasp the freehold end with that tenacity ol grip that characterises his party. We do not know whether the debate is to be confined to the two above named gentlemen, or whether the many aspirants to Parliamentary honours in the Otaki electorate will take a hand. It would, however, appear to us that the opportunity is afforded of a liberal education on the land question to Mr Murdoch and the ‘Rev” Thompson, both oi whom are rumoured to be seeking election at the next opportunity. Even the sitting member for the district might snatch a moment from his ordinary' occupations when not asking lor a railway siding, and by attending the forthcoming debate chance conversion from the inconsistency which characterised his recently recorded vote' in the House. Whilst not professing to prophesy we opine that Mr Laurenson’s verbal hydraulics will have too much pressure behind them to leave his opponent any chance.
