NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTIONS.
LABOUR 46—LIBERALS 44.
Sydney, Saturday,
Many small returns ot country electorates have still to come in but these are unlikely to alter the results.
as the figures stand the new House will he composed of — Labour 46 Liberals 44
A second ballot is required in four electorates, which may slightly alter the position of the parties. Local option returns will not be complete for some days. Later figures, however, instead of improving the No-license position as the party hoped, point strongly in the opposite direction, and to many electorates, which at last election voted reduction, reverting to continuance.
On present incomplete figures only thirteen electorates favour reduction and at last election sixty-four voted reduction. The Sydney Morning Herald, commenting on the result of the election says ; —“lt is clear that the Wade Ministry has lost its majority, but it is not so clear that Mr McGowan can form a Ministry without serious difficulties. If a Labour Government is formed it will have to depend more or less upon Liberal support. This means that we shall have to endure a search of manoeuvring on the three party system, with the Liberals practically calling the tune.’’
The Daily Telegraph declares that the election merely emphasises that vague feeling which is now manifesting itself in this and other countries, and communities, and goading them along the wild paths of experimentalise! towards an end which neither they nor anyone else can discern. Svdnev, October 17.
The final returns for Bingara give McDonald, the Labour candidate, a majority of 40 over Mr G. W. Moore, Minister for Lands. There is a possibility of Labour winning St. Leonard’s seat on the second ballot. The leaders of both sides are reticent pending the completion of the returns.
There will probably be a Cabinet meeting to-day or to-morrow to discuss the situation.
The Liquor Party is jubilant at what it claims to be a strong setback to the No-license movement.
Canon Boyce admits his party did not receive the support anticipated from the electors.
