BANK CLERKS AND MARRIAGE.

A QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT. “ The present Government has been trying to hatch schemes to encourage an increase of the birthrate, yet they allow the banks to interfere with the liberty of the subject in such a criminal way.” Such is the comment of Mr Nosworthy, M.P., attached to a question he has given notice of asking the Prime Minister, as to whether the Government will introduce legislation to prohibit the banks from preventing their employees from getting married before their salary reaches per annum. At present, says Mr Nosworthy, “ bank clerks are prohibited from marrying unless their salary reaches ,£2OO per annum under pain of dismissal, which regulation has been, and is, strictly enforced. Less than 25 per cent, have the necessary salary, and therefore must remain single.”
