FOXTON BOWLING CLUB.

The first annual meeting of the above was held in the Council Chamber on Thursday night. There was a good attendance, and the Mayor, who has officiated as chairman of the committee which has had the formation of the club in hand, presided. The election of officers resulted as follows: President. G. H. Stiles Esq., vice-presidents, Messrs P. Hennessy, Alex. Speirs and Alf. Fraser; Committee, Messrs Clemett, Hornblow, Mairs, Walker and Woods ; secretary aud treasurer, Mr H. Witchell; auditor, Mr A. J. Kellow ; ground committee, Messrs Stiles, Mairs and Woods. It was decided not to elect a patron. Special reference was made by several speakers to the enterprise and enthusiasm displayed by Mr Witchell in getting the club formed. Mr Fraser commended Mr Witchell’s enthusiasm, tact and energy. Dr. Mandl said the club owed its existence to their present secretary, aud as long as Mr Witchell was a resident here Foxton would have its bowling green. Mr Hennessy endorsed the previous speakers remarks and Mr Witchell’s election was received with applause. —In responding Mr Witchell said he had been helped in his efforts by an excellent committee who had all worked hard in the interest of the club. He particularly referred to the assistance he had received from Messrs Mairs, Walker and Clemett. At first he had no intention of continuing the secretarial duties, but he would now see the club through its initial difficulties.

The balance-sheet was read and adopted as follows : —Receipts debentures .£95, grass seed and nails £1 3s 6d, total ,£96 3s 6d. Expenses—Harrison’s contract, etc., ,£llß 17s 10, timber, ,£l2 7s nd, iron £s7 19s nd, seed and manure 9s 2d, carting soil up the total of ,£241 12s 6d, leaving aJiauk 'overdralt of ,£145 9s.

The Chiirnini stated that the purchase of a :o.Lr, mower, windmill, etc., woul I be paid out of this year’s receipts. A well bad peeu put down which would provide an ample water supply. It was decided to appoint Mr C. Spring caretaker at a salary of £26 per year. It was decided to let the choice of club colours stand over for the present. It was resolved to register the club according to statute. To mark the services of Mr Climie in preparing plans, etc. ol the green he was unanimously elected a life member of the club. Votes of thanks were accorded Messrs Hopper (for gift of tanks) and Gray (for shrubs). Correspondence was read from the secretary of the Palmerston N. Bowling Club, notifying that Foxton was entitled to compete in the Wishart Feathers Competition and enclosing conditions. An invitation was received from the same club to the opening of the green on the 19th inst. It was decided to accept tbe invitation. The Chairman said the local green would not be fit to play on before the middle of December, as a good deal of trouble was being experied in getting the grass to grow, owing, it was thought to the poorness of the soil. At a subsequent meeting of the committee it was decided to leave the purchase of the roller and mower in the hands of the President and Secretary. Mr Witchell signified his intention of giving a set of bowls for competition.
