The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, October 4, 1910. NOTES AND COMMENTS.
I'i' should be hardly necessary for us to remind ratepayers of the poll on Thursday next for the purpose of raising a loan of ,£II,OOO for the purchase of the local gas works and extending the same. In order to guarantee the loan it is proposed to strike a rate of 2 i5-i6ths of a penny in the £ on the unimproved value of all rateable property in the borough. It does not follow that any of this rate will be called up as, under proper management, there should not'be any need for doing so, but, on the contrary, the municipalising of the works should in time to come be a relief on the rates. We do not anticipate any serious opposition to the loan proposals unless the non-progressive element desire the town to remain stagnant. Anyhow, it is to Foxton’s advantage to acquire the gas works and we believe the loan will be sanctioned by a large majority. Then the way will be clear for the water and drainage proposals.
