DODGING THE INCOMETAX.
BOWRON BROTHERS’ PENALTY. Christchurch, September 21. On Friday last Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., heard the appeal of Messrs Bowron Bros, against the claim of the Commissioner of Taxes for taxation due on a sum of ,£65,972, this being the assessed income of the firm for the year 1905. The return sent in by the firm showed an assessable income ot ,£18,836, and, in respect of this, they were convicted and fined ,£IOO for making a false return. The Magistrate’s decision was forwarded to the Department. The correct amount of the sum to be paid by Bowron Bros, in respect of the income tax and penalties arising out of the short return of income in the year 1905 is ,£9408 16s. The amount of income on which tax was not paid was ,£44,965. Details of the tax, penalties, etc., are as follows: —
