LOCAL STATE SCHOOL.
IMPORTANT INNOVATION. Some time since the Wanganui Education Board circularised committees in reference to a medical cabinet, which it suggested should be purchased tor use in the schools. The committee referred the matter to the head teacher who collected funds to defray the cost of same. The committee also decided to approach Dr. Maudl, and ask whether he would explain the nature and uses of the contents, which he kindly consented to do. The outcome is that a series of lessons will be given on Friday afternoons, in the nature of first aid to’ the injured. The first lecture and demonstration was given yesterday afternoon to the pupils from Standard 111. up., and great interest was evinced by teachers and scholars alike. The children were ranged in the quadrangle and after a few introductory remarks by the headteacher aud chairman of committee, Dr. Maudl got to business. He explained the various forms of bandages and “slings” and their uses, and under his supervision, several of the pupils imitated his work. The children were somewhat amused to see one of their schoolmates being bandaged aud led round for inspection. The demonstration included the uses of the “ triangular ” aud “ broad ” bandages, the “figure eight’’and “ spiral.” The simple method of placing the “ pad ” and bandage to stop bleeding. The mode of carrying an injured person, aud making an improvised litter was also demonstrated. Finally a ' demonstration was given in resuscitation. The children were very attentive and were asked to practice what they had been shown, as they will be questioned on the various points next week.
