SENSATIONAL DUEL.
BETWEEN HUSBAND AND WIFE. Berne, September 20. A most extraordinary duel between husband and wife took place by gaslight in the principal street of Berne. It appears that a woman named Madag Remouda, a kiosk-keeper, had divorced her husband Gregorio, who had been imprisoned for ill-treating his wife. Madag Remonda, while returning home from her daily work, was shot in the back by Gregorio. The woman fell to the ground, but immediately rose to her knees, and drawing a revolver which she had carried, in view of possible emergencies, ever since she had been ill-treated, returned her assailant’s fire, at a distance of twenty-five yards. The incident occurred in the’ presence of a crowd, which soon became panic-stricken. Each of the duellists fired five shots, with the result that Gregorio was shot in the head, thi wound proving fatal. The woman received three wounds, but will probably recover.
