EDUCATION BOARD.

(By Telegraph—Special to Herald) Wanganui, This Day. The ordinary meeting of the above was held last night. Present: —Messrs Pirani (Chairman), Aldridge, Bennett, Dixon, Fraser, Guthrie, M.P., O’Dea, Purnell and Spurdle. The Bank overdraft stands at 2s rod. Accounts amounting to ,£603 15s 7d were passed for payment. Leave of absence was granted to the following on account of sickness: —G. Greenway, Himatangi; E. Mowbray, Hawera; K. Wilson, Terrace End ; A. Cameron, Ngaturi; H. M. Roach, Hawera ; E. Mossman, Marton. Leave to attend examinations was granted the following ; —H. C, Hewlett, Turaklna ; T. Barleyman, Manaia; R. D. Macrae, Tararua ; H. H. Richardson and A. A. Andrews, Queens Park; F. A. Bates, B. Brennaud and J. L. Crabbe, Feilding D.H.S. The Education Department held over the application for a residence at Glen Oroua, but granted ,£4OO for the enlargement of College street school. The Board declined an application to establish a side school at Taikorea. Several committees wrote, complaining about the necessity of a truant officer, and the Board agreed that some appointment would have to be made in the near future. The Chief Inspector recommended that the maximum holidays iu a year be 50, including the Christmas term and statutory holidays ; Christmas holidays to begin on the Thursday before Christmas, except when Christmas falls on a Friday, then the Wednesday before, duration, five weeks ; at Easter, Good Friday, Easter Monday and Tuesday ; one week each from first Friday in May and September, and the King’s Birthday ; three days at the disposal of the Board and three days at the disposal of the school committees.

The Board of Governors of the Wanganui Girls College appointed Mrs Redwood, L.R.A.M., music mistress out of nineteen applicants.
