BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Eoxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. Present: —His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles Esq.), and Councillors Rlmraer, Speirs, Adams, Stewart, Robinson, Levett, Ross and Coley. Correspondence was read from T. Cook and G. Huntley, applying for a rise of one shilling per day in wages.—lt was decided to accede to the request, and also in future to pay all casual labour at eight shillings per day. From Mr E. A. Coley, complaining of the manner in which the ranger was carrying out his duties, stating that horses had got out of the paddock and had only been on the road for ten minutes, when they were impounded, the ranger at the same time leaving other cattle on the same road. Thi poundkeeper was present, and gave a stout denial to the allegations made. There was some little discussion on the matter, and a motion, a copy of which is to be sent to the ranger, was passed, pointing out that all stock straying on the Borough roads must be impounded, failing which it will be essential for the Borough Council to appoint a new ranger. From Mr R. Moore, the Borough solicitor, forwarding two copies of the lease of portion of Purcell street to the New Zealand Hemp Process and By-Products Co., Ltd. —It was decided that the lease be signed by the Mayor and Crs Coley and Rimmer, and the seal of the Council be affixed thereto. From Mr E. Newman, M.P., advising that the petition for permission to connect the tramway with the railway line at Greatford had been before the House, but the discussion had been interrupted, and the matter would probably not come before the House again this session. Mr Newman also forwarded a copy of a letter received from the Minister for Railways, advising that the erection of a verandah at the local railway slaiion was to be put in hand at once.
From Mr G. Phillips, local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, advising that the Company was willing to pay ,£ls towards the cost of metalling in front of their sheds in Harbour street. —It was decided that the Works Committee visit the road and inspect same on Monday next, at 10.30 o’clock, with power to act. It was decided that all rates unpaid on October Ist be sued for without further notice, Cr Speirs brought up the question of obtaining a further 200 yards of metal, and it was decided that the Town Clerk make arrangements with the present contractor to supply the quantity named. The poundkeeper reported that during last month 40 head of cattle and 38 horses had been impounded by the ranger, and driving fees amounting to ,£1 os od had been collected. One cow had also been impounded by a settler. Accounts amounting to ,£270 16s 3d were passed for payment. The Borough Treasurer reported the Bank overdraft on the District Fund Account was ,£l7O, and with the accounts passed for payment that night it would be increased by a further ,£l3O. The Mayor reported that Mr Fraser and himself had interviewed Mr Richardson in reference to his offer to supply the borough with water. The price at which it was offered was two pence per 1000 gallons, to be supplied by meter erected on the Company’s property ; all pumping plant, etc., required to be erected by the Council. The Mayor said that offer could not be seriously considered, as if the Company could supply (he water the Council might just as well sink their own wells. The Mayor brought up the question of having the pound cottage painted. He said that the painter at present engaged painting the verandah had agreed to give the cottage two coats of paint and the verandah a further coat for the sum of ,£5 ros.—lt was decided to have the work done.
