The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, September 3, 1910. FOXTON RAILWAY REVENUE.
The following are the railway returns for the Foxtou section for the year ending March 30th, 1910, which we have taken from the Minister’s annual report : There are seven hands employed and the station is open 13 hours daily. The traffic expenditure for the year was ,61874. A total of 23,260 tickets were issued. Goods etc., despatched outward : 1,222 parcels, 97 horses, 7 carriages, 127 dogs, 2 drays, 50 trucks lime, chaff, etc., 60 cattle, 1,818 sheep, 2,379 bales wool, n trucks firewood, 44,700 ft. timber, 1,127 tons igcwt grain, 8,563 tons ipcwt merchandise, 8,783 tons i6cwt minerals. Revenue; from passengers, outwards, ,£2,819 is 3d, season tickets ,£ll4 4s 6d, parcels ,£205 13s 7d, luggage and miscellaneous ,£25 16s 6d, goods ,£11,338 9s 1 id, miscellaneous ,£461 4s 6d, rents and commissions £■2l4 is, total value forwarded £15,178 ns sd. Inward : horses, 15 carriages, 155 dogs, n drays, 672 trucks lime, chaff, etc., 179 cattle, 6 calves, 2,874 sheep, 49 pigs, 5,845 hales of wool, 228 trucks firewood, 1,500,500 ft timber, 2,646 tons gcwt grain, 3,083 tons i6cwt merchandise, 5,429 tons igcwt minerals. It will be seen by the above figures that Foxton is one of the most remunerative branch lines in the Dominion, added to which the railway department filch the revenue from wharfages which should go towards improving the port. We do not expect the Minister to retain these figures in his head, but it clearly demonstrates that Foxton is entitled to a much better service than at present obtains and the lighting and verandah concessions ought to have been sanctioned long ago.
