The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, September 1, 1910. SAND DRIFT.
Mk Field, M.P. for Otaki, has taken a keen interest in the sand drift question. He has been urging the Government to assist in allaying this evil which is destroying thousands of acres of otherwise productive laud in different parts of the Dominion. The following letter was received by him under date August 22nd, from the Prime Minister; With regard to your letter of the Bth instant, re the question of preventing sand-drift, I quite agree with you that this matter is of great importance, but owing to the many claims that have been received from various parts of the North Island in connection with drifting sand, I have hesitated to place any considerable sum on the Estimates lor the purpose mentioned. I will, however, carefully consider the advisability of placing the sum of ,£IOO on the Supplementary Estimates in order that a pamphlet may be prepared giving information to settlers as to the best method of preventing sand drift. The information in pamphlet form suggested by the Premier might serve a good purpose if it were backed up by legislation compelling owners of laud affected by sand drift to take remedial measures, otherwise little good will result. Our Levin contemporary suggests the setting up of a Sand Drift Board. We do not think there is any necessity for this if the Government deal with the matter in the manner suggested. However, Mr Feild is to be commended for the active interest he is displaying in the subject.
