SKATING.

The local skating rink was well patronised by enthusiasts last night. This most exhilarating pastime was freely indulged in until 10 p.m., after which a successful practice of the Grand March was held. A keen interest is being shown by those who are taking part in the march, and it should prove a decided success. Skaters generally are looking forward with pleasurable anticipation to the forthcoming carnival. On page 3 of this issue is published the programme and details of the fancy-dress carnival to be held on the Foxton rink on Wednesday, September 14 th. The programme has been arranged iu a most attractive style, both from the skaters’ and spectator’s points of view, and should command ardent support from riukers and the public generally. This will provide a unique and pretty spectacle probably never before seen in Foxton, the intermixing and blending of the gorgeous fancy costumes of the skaters as they glide evenly and gracefully along providing a scene unequalled by any other function in fancy attire. The evening’s programme will be introduced by the execution of the Grand March on skates, for which the participants have been practicing arduously iu order that every figure might be dona with precision and neatness. Trick, fancy and graceful skating will be performed by expert skaters, which will be one of the main attractions, and will add materially to the evening’s enjoyment. Prizes will be awarded iu the following competitions —Best Fancy Dress (lady), Best Fancy Dress (gentleman), Most Graceful Couple, Egg and Spoon Race, Flat Race (for gents.), Fan and Balloon Race (for ladies). With such an attractive programme, the carnival should be a thorough success under the able management of Mr Eevett and the committee
