SKATING.
A good number of enthusiasts were present at the local rink last night, the main attraction being the football match on skates. Considerable interest was centred in this novel competition, which took the form of a six-a-side tournament, the teams taking as their respective sobriquets “ Awahou ” and “Albion.” The teams were composed of the following players ; —(Awahou) Peter Robinson (capt.), Tuohey, Watson, Ashmore, Stevenson, Marsh ; (Albion) McCarthy (capt.), C. Edwards, Mitchell, Hennessy, Rimmer, and Reid. A number of spectators occupied the stage in anticipation of the event. The conditions of the game had to be adapted to the floor space available, and it was therefore decided that the teams should each defend a small square marked at either end of the hall, and as each team succeeded in depositing the ball in the square defended by their opponents such score to be counted a goal. The game was fast and exciting, and was naturally responsible for many minor abrasions and bruises. The game proved no exception to Albion-Awahou matches as far as the result was concerned, the result proving a draw —two goals each —at the termination of twenty minutes play. The comical antics described by the players in their endeavours to dodge an opponent or kick the ball was responsible for much merriment on the part of the onlookers. Mr S. Wanklyn refereed. A good evening’s rinking was enjoyed by lady and gentlemen skaters before and after the tournament. The rink was well patronised yesterday afternoon by lady skaters, and a most enjoyable time was spent on the rollers. On Tuesday night last a fair number of couples assembled at the rink to practice the Grand March for the. coming carnival. The various figures were successfully gone through, and with a few more practices the participants should be sufficiently familiar with the figures to go through them with confidence. It is necessary that still more couples should be obtained for the march, and those who have not yet taken part and would care to do so should notify Mr Levett as early as possible.
