ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.

ALLEGED BREACH OF POISONS ACT.

A young man named Eric Small appeared before the Police Court at Dunedin on Monday on a charge of having attempted to commit suicide on the 13th inst. Accused pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Phair said the accused went on the night in question to Mr Sprosen, chemist, and procured a liniment known as “A B C,” and which contains aconite, beladonna, and chloroform, three deadly poisons. He then went to the Trades Hall, where he drank about a third of the contents, falling to the floor immediately. Small was removed to the hospital and remained there until to-day. A constable had been attending him night and day at the hospital. The doctor said that Small was not in a fit condito be released. Expenses amounting to ,£l2 had been incurred, the police charges being 4s, hospital £1 10s, and cab hire 6s. The night he was admitted to the hospital he asked Constable Fox lor a bottle of poison, saying “ I took it and I’ll take it again.” He was considerably under the influence of drink when he committed the act. His Worship said he would remand accused lor a week for the purpose of obtaining the constables’ and probationers’ reports. As an outcome of the above, Harry Lionel Sprosen, chemist, was charged with having committed a breach of the Poisons Act by selling to Small a liniment containing poison, and failing to make an entry of the same in the poison book. A remand for a week was granted.
