Wellington, August 23

In the Supreme Court to-day George Johns, for assault causing actual bodily harm at Westport, two charges, was sentenced to nine months’ each, sentences to be cumulative. Chas. Brooks, on two charges of theft at Reuwicktown, was sentenced to 18 months. Accused is already on probation tor theft, and will serve the latter period when released from the Invercargill reformatory. Christchurch, August 23. The remaining charges against Bowron Bros, were mentioned in the Magistrates Court to-day and adjourned for a week, counsel being engaged in the Supreme Court. Auckland, August 23. Iu a case beard in the Supreme Court, in which a young man was charged with a sexual offence, it was stated that he was a victim of personal weakness, and had been iu communication with “quacks ” in Australia, who professed to cure such diseases. The correspondence was handed to the Chief Justice, who, after perusing it. remarked that the letter contained a deliberate attempt to blackmail the young fellow. He suggested it should be forwarded to the Commissioner of Police iu Sydney. Accused’s counsel stated that £iS had been extracted from the young man.
