BRITISH CRUISER AGROUND.
London, August 22, Reuter’s Tokio correspondent reports that the British cruiser Bedford, 9SOO tons, while steaming from Wei-hei-wai to Nagasaki, went aground at Quelpart Island about 200 miles west of Nagasaki. Japanese warships have been sent to her assistance. The cruiser Bedford was making a trip.l at full speed when she ran ashore at Quelpart. The inrush of water caused the deaths of an engineer, 15 stokers and two seamen. The remainder were taken off by the Minotaur, The Monmouth stood by the wreck, but the heavy seas forced her to put to sea during the night. The Bedford is full of water to the engine room bulkhead. Admiral Winslow reports that there is little chance of saving her. The Bedford is a first-class cruiser of 9800 tons displacement and 22,457 i.b.p. She was built at Govan, and completed in 1903 at a total cost of ,£706,020. She carries a complement of 537 men, and is commanded by Captain Is. 3. Fitzherbert.
