A DARING BURGLARY.
An audacious burglary is reported from I,eviu. At an early hour on Sunday morning the Levin Hotel was broken into and the safe removed and blown open, and a considerable sum of money stolen therefrom. The police subsequently effected the arrest of John Earnshaw, Henry Robert Hunt, and Leslie Ellis, suspected of the crime, while breakfasting at Mr Porter’s flaxmill, at Koputaroa. Earnshaw, when arrested, had 12s 4d on him, Hunt had 3d, and Ellis no money. At the Levin Police Court yesterday, the accused were charged as follows: —“ On 21st August, 1910, at Levin, did burglarously break and enter by night the dwelling-house of John Berryman, and steal therein one safe value about containing 13s 3jzd in money, eighteen cheques value about one postal note for ss, five gold rings value 1 os, one gold tie pin value £6, one lady’s gold watch and chain value £io> one gold locket and chain value £l, one lady’s silver watch value £l, one gent’s gold watch value £B, one silvermounted purse value 10s, one towel value is; total value, ,£175 19s 3j£d, the property of John Berryman.” The police asked for a remand until Tuesday, 30th Augjrst. The accused made no objection. They made no application for bail, and they were removed in custody. All three are young men. The eldest gives his age as 28, and the youngest as 21.
