THE BEACH ROAD.

The Mayor uas received a communication from Mr E- Newman, M.P., covering a letter from the Minister for Public Works, in respect to the application for a grant of £too towards the construction of the Beach road. Mr Newman states that he has written to the Chairman of the Manawatu County Council suggesting that a deputation representing all parties interested might wait upon the Minister and urge that a subsidy be granted. Mr Newman says that in view of the large amount being contributed by local bodies and others, that the Government should assist in this work. The letter received from the Minister by Mr Newman reads as follows ; “Adverting to your letter of the 12th ultimo, in which you made application for a subsidy of ,£7OO to assist in the construction of a road from Foxtou to the Heads, and to my interim reply of 13th idem thereto :—I have to state that lam in receipt of a report upon the matter from the Department’s Engineer, for which it appears that the total length of road is about y/z miles, 2>£ miles of which have been formed and one and a half metalled. The metalled portion lying within the borough boundary. There is about one mile of new formation to construct. From the information supplied to me, it seems that the purpose for which this road is to be constructed is to serve people using Foxtou Heads as a watering place during summer. I believe at the present time that coaches and vehicles of all kinds run regularly between the two places in summer, conveying passengers to and fro without difficulty. In these circumstances, and in view of the difficulty which exists in allocating sufficient funds to provide settlers with means of access to their holdings, I regret I am unable to see my to give further consideration to the application you make for a grant of for this work. —I am etc., R. McKenzie.”
