A TERRIBLE DISEASE.

REACHES QUEENSLAND. Brisbane, August 15. Dr. Bernel, Director of the Tropical Diseases Institute, reports that the earth-eating disease —a terrible habit that has been and is working havoc in the southern States of America —is prevalent in the Cairns district (Queensland). A number of children are treated in the hospital every week for the disease. As far as children were concerned it meant a permanent and blighting influence ou their mental and moral development. Touching the question of whether white men could stand the strain of cutting sugar cane in the tropics, Dr Bernel expresed the opinion that alcoholtsm and other debilitating habits did much more to impair the health of the workers than cane cutting.
