NEWS AND NOTES.
Recently influenza was raging among horses in this district. Here is an alleged certain cure, culled from a contemporary:— “ Get some bluegum leaves, fill a kerosene tin, add water, and then boil for, say, two hours. Now get an ordinary sugar bag, and make a nose bag of it by turning half of it down ; put in about a quart of bran, pour the hot liquid on the bran, and then put the nosebag on the horse. Keep it hot by adding liquid every hour. I will guarantee the above simple cure to win nine times out of ten. I have proved it, and during the past few weeks have treated over a dozen horses, and they have all got well, including a valuable stallion. Of course, the horse must be kept warm. A split sack under the ordinary rug is a good and cheap thing.'’
What is probably one of the most remarkable freaks of nature ever known has been discovered at Patho, in Victoria. A cow on the property of M’Conarchy Bros, gave birth to a calf which was literally turned inside out. The head, legs, tail and hair were all inside the skin, while the stomach, intestines, liver and backbone were all on the outside. The skin on the hinder part of the body was doubled forward from the girth, enclosing, as it were, the hind legs, head and fore part of the body, and was grown together. The head was straight on top of one front leg, and the legs were all turned upside down. Needless to say, the calf did not live.
