FOOTBALL.
Commenting on last Saturday’s rep. fixture at Devin between Foxton and Horowhenua, the Horowhenua Chronicle says : “The senior rep. match played at Devin last Saturday showed the Horowhenua team on one of its day’s out. Notwithstanding the fact that they were opposed to a much weaker combination of backs, the home rearguard gave a display rarely seen in this Union. The trip to Australia of the Winiatas and Rawiri with the Maori team will have a good effect on local football and in consequence great interest should be manifested in the coming rep. matches. The visiting forwards did what they liked with the local pack, and secured the ball from the scrums with monotonous regularity. Reid and Anderson were perhaps the most conspicuous of a very even lot. Of the backs Charlie Broughton played a great game behind the scrum, getting his side out of difficulties repeatedly. Unfortunately his supporting backs were weak and frequently did not take advantage of the openings made for them. Walter Winiata, for the home team, played a fine game ; none of the other members of the pack showing up very prominently. Of the local backs Royal was the weakest. Cook, at wing three-quarter, did not get many opportunities to show his speed, but did whatever came his way in a business like manner. He has one bad fault, that is the man he is waiting to get a pass from. All the other backs gave tine displays. As a set-off against the Manawatu Union’s charges of discourtesy on the part of the Taranaki Union, the hotelkeeper where the Manawatu team stayed at Hawera has forwarded to the local Union a report of disgraceful conduct of the men. The report was forwarded to the Palmerston body.
