SOCIETY GAMBLING RAID

New York, August 9. The Narragansett raid on a high society gambling saloon was due to six informers. Headed by Cross, a newlycreated constable, without warrant or knowledge of the Chief of Police, the raiders, armed with axes, over-powered the guard at the entrance. They then rushed the roulette hall, which was luxuriously appointed. The raiders drew revolvers, and ordered brilliantly-gowned and bejewelled women to one side. The men were in a state of utter panic. The women gave false names and many pleaded for release on the ground of their husbands’ anger. Cross, however, was adamant. A sum of ,£6OOO was found upon the table, and this was confiscated. Caswell, Chief of Police, then arrived and ordered the raiders to desist. Cross refused, and a fight ensued. Cross and the raiders were arrested and charged with assaultAfter which three motor cars mysteriously arrived and removed every trace of gambling. The Narragansett gamblers were taken to the Police Court in manacles, against which they protested. I.ATER. The Narragansett case will be heard next Monday. Every effort will be made to keep secret the names of the leading hostesses of New York, • Philadelphia, and Boston society, who are connected with the raid.
