POLITICAL NOTES.

In the course of his peregrination during the recess the Hon. R. McKenzie turned up in the Egmont constituency, represented by Mr Dive, on a Sunday and was asked to look over the proposed route of a railway on that day. Since the session commenced Mr Dive has expressed himself on the subject of Mr McKenzie’s statement that he did not work on a Sunday, and he insinuated that the Minister was one who would swallow a camel and strain at a gnat. The suggestion was made that Cabinet met on Sundays, but the Prime Minister gave an unqualified denial to that suggestion. It was absolutely contrary to fact. Ministers, he added, had met on Sundays to discuss matters of some concern, but there had been no Cabinet meeting. They were all opposed to Sunday work. “If,” he said, “Mr Dive wants the Minister to inspect the line on a Sunday I hope the railway will never be built.”

Speaking in respect to Government House the Governor says : “Having travelled over most parts of the Empire, and seen most Government Houses, I can say that, although the outward appearance of the Governor’s new residence in Wellington is not at present perhaps as attractive as it might be, as regards the interior arrangements and comforts it compares more than favourably with any other Government Houses. Regarding the new Government House itself, I have expressed only one opinion about it. It is an excellent hoitse, presenting a very stately appearance outside, and the interior is quite singular in its arrangements.”
