ILL-TREATMENT OF A CHILD.

At the Wellington Magistrate’s Court this week, before Mr W. G. Riddell, S-M., a woman named Valentine Moiser was charged with that during July, at Wellington, being a person having the custody ot a certain girl under the age of 16 years, namely, Dominica Moiser, aged 4 years 10 mouths, she wilfully ill-treated such child in a manner likely to cause injury to Us health. On behalf ot the police Inspector Norwood asked for a remand of accused till the 29th inst. His Worship acceded to the request, and fixed bail in the sum of and one surety of a like amount. The case arose out of a fire which took place recently in Charlton Avenue in a house occupied by a man named Farley Valentine Moiser, and two children, Louis H, Moiser (5 years xo months), and Dominica Moiser (4 years 10 months). At the time of the outbreak, Mr Carroll, a labourer, was passing the house. He ran up, smashed in the door, and found the front room on fire. He heard the child in one of the rooms, but could not get through, so he broke a window, got through, and felt about till he found the child. He then lifted it through the window. The child had almost collapsed from the smoke, and the bedding on which it was lying was ablaze. According to the Sub-Inspector’s statement the mother, it was alleged, went out and left the child tied up to the bed with a piece of string tied round its neck. Constable Boyle arrived on the scene and took charge of the child, which was found, it was asserted, to be in a shocking condition. Subsequently a doctor arrived, and ordered the removal of the child to the hospital. The Magistrate committed the other child to St. Mary’s Industrial School. SubInspector Norwood stated that in view of the probable necessity for the child remaining in the hospital he might have to ask for a further remand.
