SHEARERS’ DISPUTE.
DUNEDIN, July 18
A representative of the shearers stated to a Star reporter that the workers throughout tho Dominion were determined to obtain £1 per hundred or take up other work, it was pointed out tliat tho improved quality of sheep and the increased production of wool entitled the men to a liighcr rate oi wages. Twenty years ago shearers on an average made from fifteen shillings per day, whereas now tho average rate is eight shillings. It was contended that the shearers’ demands wovdd means an increase of £25 on a Hock of 20,000 sheep to the workers, whereas the increased market rate, compared with that ruling ten years ago, means an increased return of over £2OOO to tho sheep-owners.
