monthly meeting
The monthly meeting of the Foxtou Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. Present: —His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles Esq.,) Crs. Rimmer, Gibbs, Adams, Stewart, Robinsou and Speirs. Correspondence was read from Messrs Levin and Co. Ltd., Fox-
ton, again asking that the streets leading to the wharf be better lighted. They pointed out that when vessels were in port Wharf street is one of the most frequently used at night, and therefore requested that one lamp at least should be erected at the junction of Wharf and Harbour Street. — No action taken. From the Bruce County Council, forwarding copy of resolution passed on June 7 th, asking the Government to amend the Rating Act, by making it compulsory upon conveyancers or owners to give written notice to the local authorities of every change of ownership or occupancy of rateable property within the County.—Received. From the Deputy-Valuer Gen-
era’, regretting it was impossible v/ to revise the Borough in time for ' the rule book of 19x0-11. The question of revising the borough as at the 31st March next —in time for the 1911-12 rate book —will shortly be taken into consideration, and advice would be forwarded later if it was decided to re-value the borough.—-Received. From the Agricultural Department, notifying that capeweed and pennycress had been declared notions weeds. —Received. From Mr H. W, Climie, offering, should it be decided to have a report and estimate of the Shannon scheme fora water supply, prepared to carry out the work lor a small fee, sufficient to pay his expenses, say —Received. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that the borough was in a fair sanitary condition. The poundkeeper reported that
during the month of June 25
cattle, one donkey, and 4+ horses had been impounded by tie ranger, and driving fees amounting to’,£i 3s uae been collected. Accounts amounting to ,£216 7s 7d were passed for payment. On the motion of Cr Speirs seconded by Cr Adams, it was de-
cided to put pipes in the drains In Russell Street (opposite Mr C. T. Easton’s), Futter Street (opposite Mr Page’s) and Coley Street (opposite Messrs Newth and Walsh’s.) Cr Speirs presented a petition from ratepayers in Johnston Street, asking that a footpath be constructed along the east side of Johnston Street, which in accordance with the standing orders was allowed to lay on the table for a month.
The following tenders were received for the supply of 200 yards of metal: On trucks Jackeytown, J. L. Buick as 4d per yard, T. and A. Buick 2s sd, Robert Neale 3s, E. White and Sou 2s xod; On trucks Palmerston N., West Coast
Steamship and Trading Co. Ltd., 3s 6d, E. White and Son 2s 3d, and one tender on trucks Kakareki,
at 2s gd per yard. The tender of E. White and Son at 2s 3d per yard on trucks at Palmerston N. was accepted. For the erection of a verandah on the pound cottage the following tenders were received ; A. Jonson ,£lB xos, W. Rimmer ,£24 and J. G. Speirs ,£23 Bs. The last two tenderers gave particulars of the work to be done and the material etc to be used, but the lowest tender was for the erection of a verandah and gave no particulars whatever. It was decided to accept the tender of W. Rimmer.
Cr Adams drew attention to the danger from collisions at the corner from the Avenue turning down Russell Street on account of the iron fence that has been erected by the Bowling Club.
The Town Clerk said that the formation of a footpath along the north side of the Avenue had been authorised and when this work
was done the kerbing would be carried out past the corner and would thus do away with the present danger. Two letters received from the Gas Company in reply to the offer for the purchase of the works were read and discussed in committee. The Company stated the price at which they were prepared to sell the works to the Council. On resuming a motion was carried to the effect that a special meeting be held at an early d ate to fully go into the subject. The Council rose at 10 p.m.
