THE MONARCH'S PURSE.
London, July 7
The Civil List Committee has recommended the voting of a similar amount to King George to that granted King Edward, viz., ,£470,000 per annum. An increase of ,£13,000 to provide for the younger members of the Royal Family is, however, also recommended.
It is understood that, following the precedent of 1901, when Queen Alexandra was given a contingent annuity of ,£70,000 in the event of her surviving King Kdward, the committee will recommend a similar contingent annuity to Queen Mary in the event of her surviving King George. The Civil Hist Committee proposes that King George shall not pay income tax, but shall defray the cost of the State visits of foreign mouarchs to Britain. No provision is made for the Duke of Cornwall, but the other Royal Princes are to receive an annuity of ,£IO,OOO. This will be raised to ,£15,000 after the Princes have reached their majority. The Princess Royal, upon her marriage, will receive ,£6OOO per annum. Mr G. N. Barnes, Labour member for Glasgow, Blackfriars, added a memorandum making the suggestion that the revenues of the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall should be handed to the nation and treated as revenue lor settling the Civil List.
