RELIGIOUS BROTHERHOOD.
SCHEME REJECTED, -a (By Telegraph—Special to Herald). Wellington, This Day, At yesterday’s sitting of the Anglican Synod, a great debate took place on the Brotherhood scheme proposed by the Rev G. Y. Woodward, vicar of All Saints, Foxton. There was much opposition by the laity, and the movement had the support of a majority of the clergy. The motion was lost. The Rev Mr Woodward, in his speech, referred to the report of the sub-committee appointed to go into the matter, and he made a strong appeal on behalf of the scheme. He said the needs of such a society were manifest, as the church was only working half its machinery, and that the parochial system, but it needed the life of evangelical freedom, the community life, to reinforce it. If it is to cope with the work in the large towns then the Church needed specialising work, and the priests would become specialists. Such an institution, said the, speaker, would make permanent the coming mission to New Zealand.
