AGRICULTURAL JOURNAL.
We have received copies of the Journal of the New Zealand Department of Agriculture from the Minister of the Department and also Mr Field, M.P. for Otaki, The Journal will take the place of the Department’s annual report, and should be subscribed to by every person who is interested in agriculture. It contains much expert advice and results of investigations undertaken by the Department. The Journal will afford information on many special and general lines ; it will circulate the results ot investigations ; it will enunciate the views of the professional and expert officers of the Department; it will welcome contributions ; and it will reply to questions on agricultural subjects —accepting “agriculture” in its widest and most comprehensive meaning. In an introductory note, the Hon. Thomas McKenzie says that “In New Zealand there are many problems relating to agriculture to be solved, such as the restoration and conservation of the grasses and edible plants of the pastoral lands of the central regions of the South Island, the development of wide areas of the interior of the North Island, and the utilisation of land situated on the western coast of the South Island. These lands have not been made full use of for pastoral or agricultural pursuits on account of the difficulties that they present. It is the intention of the Department to undertake investigations in the direction of the elucidation of these special conditions.” A report of the first investigations on this subject is included in the current issue. The dairy interest is also considered, an officer of that Division contributing a paper on this subject. The Journal will not be confined to a uniform number of pages. The Department will provide and select for publication information of value and interest to its readers. The Department earnestly solicits the co-operation of all who are interested in rural pursuits. It will gladly receive suggestions. The price of the Journal (asdd) is simply a ctarge to defray the expense of transmission, and on the receipt of that sum, addressed to the Editor, Publications Section, Department of Agriculture, Wellington, the Journal will be forwarded.
