RELIGIOUS BROTHERHOOD.
One of the most interesting debates at the last session of the Anglican Diocesan Synod took place on the following motion of the Rev. G, Y. Woodward, vicar of All Saints (Foxton); —“That this synod recommend the establishment of a brotherhood, devoted to voluntary service, in this diocese, for the purpose of coping with the three greatest needs of the day: (1) Religious education of the young ; (2) street missions; (3) religious work among bodies of labouring men ; and that a committe be appointed to promote and carry into effect the object of this institution.” An amendment was finally carried approving of the proposal, and appointing the Revs. C. C. Harper,}. H.Sykes, G.Y. Woodward, and J. Walker a committee, with power to add to their number, to consider the matter, and if the scheme were found practicable to draw up a report to be presented at the next meeting of the synod. The report of the committee to be submitted on Tuesday next is as follows: — “ A suggestion by the principal of the community of the resurrection (which is warmly commended also by the forerunners of the General Mission) that a branch house of that Brotherhood might be set up in New Zealand, seems to the committee worthy of the closest consideration. The Committee recommend that they be continued in office for another year, for the purpose of conference with some of the missioners of the coming general mission, and with power to take such steps as may be necessary for the establishment of a brotherhood in the diocese.”
