MUNICIPAL GASWORKS.

WANGANUI FIGURES. Wanganui, June 26. During the ceremony of starting a newly installed booster on Saturday afternoon some interesting figures were quoted relative to the progress made by the Municipal Gas Works during the last lour years. The number of consumers has increased from 1558 to 2650. The gas made in 1906 amounted to forty million feet, necessitating 3500 tons of coal; this year seventy-two million feet of gas were made from 5786 tons of coal. Cash collected in 1906 was ,£12,688, whereas this year the total is ,£23,488. The number of retorts has been increased from 24 to 68, and a large quantity of improved apparatus has been added to the works, which are now declared by experts to be the most up-to-date in the Dominion. During the past four years, castiron mains and wrought - iron mains were extended fourteen and tour miles respectively. Since the municipalisation of the gas works some eight years ago, ,£13,goo has been transferred in relief of rates.
