POWELKA SENTENCED.
Poweeka has been sentenced to a term ot 21 years imprisonment. Thus the curtain is rung down on one of the most extraordinary and exciting events in the history of district criminology. It is unnecessary to refer to the incidents surrounding the trial, they are too well-known to our readers. To some it' may appear that the sentence imposed by Judge Cooper is unnecessarily severe and that mercy has not been tempered with justice. But, in the interests of the general public, what might be considered an ordinary punishment would not meet this particular case. The moral effect of the sentence should have a wholesome effect upon hairbrained individuals, who, if Powelka had been dealt leniently with may have been tempted to go the length of their tether and pose as “heroes.” One point, however, has been overlooked. What about the remisness of the officials who were responsible for allowing Powelka his liberty ? Surely, these officials should be disrated or otherwise dealt with.
