POWELKA ACQUITTED.

ON THE CHARGE OF MURDER. The final scene in the trial of Joseph Powelka for the murder of Sergeant McGuire, was enacted at Palmerston on Saturday, when the Jury returned a verdict ot not guilty, there not being sufficient evidence to show who fired the fatal shot. A rider was added that the evidence had proved conclusively that Detective Quartermaine did not fire the shot which killed Sergeant McGuire. When Mr Reid, the foreman of the jury, announced the verdict of not guilty the prisoner commenced to tremble violently, and his trembling increased until he was removed to an ante-room in a state of collapse. He soon recovered, but did not speak a word as to the verdict.
