MUNICIPAL COAL YARD.

[to the EDITOR.J Sir. —'Re the letters appearing in your valuable paper on the above subjects, I had decided not to take any notice of these, firstly, because there was nothing worth replying to, and secondly because I am not particular whether a Municipal Coal Yard is opened or not, that is, if it is run on business lines, for no doubt it would be a good customer of ours. But, as Cr Robinson has brought the name of my company into the controversy, and in connection therewith has made some altogether false and misleading statements, I cannot therefore allow these statements to pass unchallenged. In the first place Cr Speirs is not a shareholder in my company, and Cr Gibbs has only been acting as our agent during his appointment as clerk of works of our wharf. Cr Robinson has also the following quotation in his letter, "their Manager on the 9th inst., quoted 19s 6d to 29s at the ship's side, or 4s per ton more than State price -«lor Pupongay an admittedly inferior coal." Now sir, this last sentence is the crux of all Cr Robinson's actions in this matter. This statement is made obviously with the object of doing harm to the trade of my company, if not, why were these words "an admittedly inferior coal" tacked on ? Had he had an open mind on the subject he would have stopped at the word Puponga. If a Municipal Coal Yard is needed so badly in Foxton, how is it Cr Robinson has not moved in the matter before ? The price of coal if anything has come down since we have been doing business in Foxton, and our prices are reasonable, and he cannot complain on that score. It therefore follows that the reason he is anxious for a Municipal Coal Yard, is not so much that it will benefit the residents of Foxton, as that he thinks it will be the means of bumping up against capital (which I believe Cr Robinson has a great antipathy for, if in the hands of anybody but himself).| In using such expressions it appears to me that Cr Robinson is rather placing himself within the power of the law, but as he did this, as usual, without thinking we will let it pass. As this admittedly inferior coal, for where does Cr Robinson obtain his information ? Not from the State, for after exhaustive trials it is using Puponga in preference to its own coal at Nelson, Picton, Wanganui (2000 tous just ordered), and trials are now being made in this district (one cargo was delivered last month, and another is now on order). But perhaps Cr Robinson is dealing with it as a household coal. Well, here is a chance for him to prove his words. We will supply a ton of Puponga to be tried with a ton of State, and if Puponga does not come out worth from 3s to 5s per ton more than State we will give Cr Robinsou jCs- if oa the other hand it does Cr Robinson is to hand ,£5 to the hospital, or Municipal Coal Yard.—l am, etc., R. McMukkav.
