FOOTBALL.

On Saturday the Awahou seniors journeyed to Rongotea and were defeated by Manawatu by six points to three. The home team was represented by a far stronger fifteen than was the case in the match against Albions a fortnight back, but Awahou were unable to get their full team away and had to fill up with one or two junior players. The game from a spectator’s point of view was uninteresting, as it was confined almost entirely to the forward division. The home team which was by far the heavier set of forwards were successful in getting the ball trom practically every scrum, and the Awahou backs therefore got no opportunities. In the first spell Manawatu had slightly the best of the play and put on six points, two unconverted tries. The first part ol the second spell was very even, but for the last twenty minutes Manawatu were kept penned on the line, but put up a very sound defence through which the visitors were only successful in breaking through once. This try was not converted and the whistle went with the score Manawatu 6 —Awahou 3. Mr Stitchbury of Rongotea, refereed.

The first match of the junior competition was played on the racecourse on Saturday afternoon, between Albion and Awahou, and resulted in a win for the former by eight points to three. To call the game football one would need to have a very imaginative mind, as it was 'thing more uor less than a gam,- of “kick and push.” Albion’s score was made up of a goal from a try and a penalty goal, and Hooker scored a try for Awahou. Dr. Adams gave every satisfaction as referee.

The behaviour of a certain section of the spectators at Saturday’s junior match was, to say the least, disgraceful, and if there is a repetition of such hoodlumism the Sub-Union executive will have to take steps to prevent the offenders from attending any of the matches played under their jurisdiction.
