SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting oi the Foxton School Committee was held in the school-house on Thursday evening. Present : Messrs Hornblow (chairman) Rev Aitken, Betty, Ballard, Geo. Coley Henderson, Hussey, Eevett and Alex. Speirs. Correspondence was read from the Kducation Board (i) notifying the appointment of a probationer ; (2) asking the Committee to appoint a local truant officer for Foxton and adjacent schools, whose remuneration would be the fines inflicted ; (3) circular setting forth the ceremonies to be observed on Empire Day, 24th inst.
It was decided on the motion of Mr Coley to appoint Mr Martin as truant officer, subject to his acceptance and to write to the Board for fuller information on the subject. It was decided that the arrangements re Empire Day celebrations be left to the headmaster and that as many of the committee as could make it convenient \ attend the school at 1 p.m. and that the children be briefly addressed on some subject appropriate to the occasion. Messrs Aitken and Betty, visitors for the month, reported that several repairs required effecting, otherwise everything was in good order. —The report was adopted. The Secretary was authorised to get the broken windows replaced aud Mr Speirs stated that he would attend to the fixing of the bell.
It was reported that the leakage in one of the skylights was being .y attended to. The Chairman's action in authorising the removal of the sheds, swings, etc., part of the ground improvement scheme, was endorsed, the work being carried out by the caretaker. Mr Coley was authorised to purchase a ton of coal. Mr Coley asked whether pickets were to be nailed on to the present front portion of the fence or if new material were to be used. If the former then it would be better to leave the fence as it is because it would look disgraceful. The Chairman said the work was being done by the Board and not the Committee and he did not know whether new material was provided for in the specifications. The matter was left in the hands of Mr Fraser. Mr Speirs said as much oi the old material was to be used as possible. After further discussion , the Chairman and Messrs Coley and Levett were deputed to wait on Mr Fraser in respect to the matter. Accounts were passed for payment and the Chairman and Secretary were appointed to sign cheques. Messrs Bullard and Coley were appointed visitors for the month.
