SUPREME COURT.
BUSINESS AT NEXT WEEK’S SESSION.
The coming session of the Supreme Court, commencing on Monday next at Palmerston N., before his Honour Mr Justice Cooper, promises to be one of the lengthiest and most notable on record. There are, of course, the numerous charnes against Joseph Powelka, which will occupy a week at least if all are heard. We understand that as yet no outside lawyer has been engaged for the defence. The order of criminal business has not been fixed so far, and it is not settled whether these charges will be heard first or last.
The other criminal business includes the re-hearing of the charges against Archibald Muir, of Longburn, on which the jury failed to agree last session. Robert Patrick Daly is charged with theft of a gold watch at Palmerston ; William Worthington, false pretences at Dannevirke; George Murray, theft of a postal packet at Ohakuue ; and Albert George Steward, breach of the Bankruptcy Act. There is a substantial civil list (not yet complete). The most important cases are: Libel action, V. M. Brauud v. E. D. Hoben, claim ,£5Ol ; same C. C. Warner, slander, ,£200; W. H. Duncan v. Glen Oroua Cooperative Dairy Co., wrongful dismissal, ,£250; Elizabeth Jane Campbell and D. H. Campbell v. Philip J. Heunessy, damages, collision with a motor car ; Maurice O’Connor v. Oroua County Council, ,£lß9l is id. work done in connection with Lower Gorge bridge ; National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., v. Axel Eraderick Anderson, £592 6s rod, a claim for return of value of cheques cashed in connection with the Muir case. All these are jury cases with the exception of the Braund-Warner slander action.
So lar there are thirteen other civil actions and three undefended divorces, besides the usual bankruptcy cases. It is probable another halt-dozen will be added to the civil list before it closes.
