SHOT IN A BEDROOM.

Melbourne, May 15. A sensational attempt to rob the local branch of the E. S. and A. Bank occurred at Boxhill. a township about nine miles from Melbourne. It was foiled by the presence of mind ot the manager, Mr Sutton, and his wife. Early this morning Mr Sutton was awakened by a light shining in his face. He found himself looking down the barrel of a revolver. A man in a motor overall, with bis face masked, was standing at the bedside. The intruder demanded money, and ordered Mr Sutton to get up. Keeping Mr Sutton covered with the revolver, he told him to throw up his arms. In the meantime Mrs Sutton was awakened. She told the man uot to hurt her husband, at the same time pulling the bell-rope at the head of the bed, connecting with the kitchen. She then told the robber that she had given the alarm. The man rushed to the head of the bed, and secured the bell-pull. He again ordered Mr Sutton to get up.

Mr Sutton, bringing down his arms upon the bed, managed to secure his revolver from under his pillow. He fired point-blank at the robber, who bending down, rushed out of the room.

Though thus converted into a fugitive, he had sufficient presence of mind to close the door of the bedroom after him to hinder pursuit, aud he also fired back through the panel of the door, the bullet striking the wall near the bed. Mr Sutton telephoned to the police, who did not arrive for a considerable time. In the meanwhile the man got away. Traces of blood were found where he rambled about the premises, seeking an escape, the blood evidently being the result of Mr Sutton’s shot.
