ENGLISHMAN’S FREAK.

DRIVES 700 MILES IN A

SWISS CAB

A “ mad ” Englishman has created a record by driving in a hired carriage from Interlaken to Cannes, covering a distance of nearly 700 miles. On January 18th, the Englishman, with a Gladstone bag, jumped into a cab at Interlaken, and told the astonished driver to take him to a certain hotel at Cannes. The driver came down from his seat, thinking probably that he would have to drive his fare to a lunatic asylum, but his fare seemed perfectly sane, and produced his pocket-book full ol bank notes. “These are my guarantees and my name and address,” said the Englishman, and the Swiss driver took him at his word. At any price the “ mad ” Englishman wanted to be driven to Cannes —time was no object—for he wanted to see the scenery. The cocher put on another horse, and the journey started through Geneva, Grenoble, Lyons and Marseilles.

On February Ist the carriage arrived at Cannes, covering on the average sixty miles a day, and after three days’ rest, the driver left for Interlaken, where he arrived recently. He says he has never had such an original and good paying fare, aud he wishes that more “mad ” Englishmen of this type would employ him.
